If you haven’t heard the news, as of today, Redbox will startstocking video games from across the three major consoles, ranging from the newest triple A releases (Infamous 2, LA Noire) to some multiplayer favorites (CoD: BO, Just Dance 2).
Adding to the numerous methods of distribution, in addition to in-store pickup, ordering through Amazon, over the mail via GameFly, and digital download, gamers can now go and check their local Redbox for a last minute rental (charging you $2.00 per day).
With Blockbusters everywhere closing down, the rental landscape was looking pretty grim. Yes, GameFly has improved the availability of its titles and turn around time, but if you were looking to pick up the newest big name release at the last minute, you were usually out of luck (if you’re really dedicated, you can purchase a new title and sell it a few days later on Amazon as a loss of about what you would have spent on a Blockbuster rental anyway).
Assuming that they’ll be a somewhat adequate supply of games at your average kiosk, I’m excited to have another option. Especially with the high price of games but relatively short length of play, it’ll give a lot of people a much more affordable way to check out the newest releases without much risk.
At the very least, hopefully this will revitalized video game rentals and provide some more competition that might, MIGHT, bring down the cost of playing video games.
So will anyone else be checking this out anytime soon?
